As shared from Alex Klemm, a 2026 Scholarship Recipient:

“My experience with cancer, and especially with some scary toxicity events I endured during treatment, really changed how I see the world. It showed me how fragile my life is, and how quickly things can go from bad to worse. These moments of terror gave me an appreciation for the life I had and was living, despite being diagnosed with cancer, having to social distance from everyone, enduring difficult treatments, and spending days and hours in the hospital and clinic.

In this life we can choose to let adversity and hardship define us, but the lesson I’ve learned is to choose to define myself. The gift of health I now have encourages me to live with spontaneity and purpose. At college I do everything I can to meet new people, join new clubs, participate in activities, and try new things. I encourage my friends as well to seize every opportunity, to see where it might take us. A perfect fit for everything we try is not guaranteed and that’s ok. The whole point is to find which new paths are for you and which are not. It is amazing to think that meeting one person, or trying one new thing can change the whole course of your life. I live with an eagerness to discover the great mystery of where my life will go. I know from my experience that tomorrow is not certain. I choose to live a life worth living.”
